This year’s LSE Southeast Asia Forum takes place as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations gears up to mark the 50th anniversary of its establishment. However, even as ASEAN prepares to celebrate its many achievements, Southeast Asian states are facing a set of complex challenges.
Questions of regional order arise from the geopolitical competition between major powers but also from domestic political change and the effects of leadership transitions on foreign policy continuity in certain ASEAN countries. Other challenges relate to ASEAN’s efforts to deepen regional integration in the form of the ASEAN Economic Community and the Political-Security Community.
Our Forum will address these questions through four expert panels and a keynote lecture, with speakers drawn from the region as well as Europe and the US.
